Choral Weekend

The Armidale Music Foundation's Annual Choral and Orchestral Weekend provides opportunities for musicians from NSW and further afield to rehearse and perform another large scale masterpiece, under the guideance of one of Australia’s foremost choral tutors.

Commencing in 1998 with Orff’s Carmina Brurana, highlights of the weekend have included Verdi’s Requiem (1999), Poulenc’s Gloria (2006), and A Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams (2000). More recently, participants have enjoyed Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass (2016) and Dvorák’s Mass in D Major (2017), which marked the AMF Choral and Orchestral Weekend’s 20th anniversary.

The 20th Armidale Music Foundation Annual Choral and Orchestral Weekend again provides an opportunity for singers from NSW and further afield to rehearse and perform another large scale choral masterpiece under the guidance of one of Australia’s foremost choral tutors. In 2017, the work will be Antonin Dvorak's Mass in D Major.

Daniel Bonnell is known throughout the United States, England and Israel as one of the few noted sacred painters of the 21st Century. His work is used by the theologian writers such as the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby as examples of contemporary icons in their writings and book covers. Following the highly successful one-man-show at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, London, in 2004, Bonnell has become a noted artist for publishers around the world for book covers that express a nontraditional neo-expressionist position on theology and scripture. He is the author of the book Shadow Lessons (Wipf&Stock Publishers, 2012) in which he details the trials and lessons learned in teaching art to at-risk inner city high school students, and is a contributing writer for ArtPulse Magazine. Bonnell received his BFA from Atlanta College of Art and his MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. He has studied under acclaimed artists Ansel Adams, Milton Glaser and Ed Ross.


Friday 10th March: Optional preliminary rehearsal 2 - 4pm.
Registration and rehearsal 6.30 - 9 pm

Saturday 11th March: Choral rehearsals 9 - 5 with breaks for morning and afternoon teas and lunch. The orchestra will join us at 2pm.
Barbecue 6.30 pm

Sunday 12th March: 9 - 1pm . (Orchestra from 11am)
Concert 2.30 pm


New England Girls’ School (NEGS), Armidale. The school is located on the outskirts of town on the old New England Highway (Uralla Road) on the southern side of Armidale, on the right – hand side when travelling south towards Tamworth.

Antonin Dvorak's Mass in D Major Op. 86

Antonin Dvorak's Mass in D Major, also known as the  'Luzany Mass' was commissioned in 1887 by the wealthy architect and patron of the arts Josef Hlávka. In 1886 Hlávka had a new chapel built in his summer residence, a castle in Luzany near Plzen, and required a new piece for its consecration. Dvorak, a good friend of Hlávka's, was glad to oblige and wrote the Mass in only three months. Originally intended for solo voices and small choir, the Mass was later arranged by the Novello Publishing Company (1892) for choir and symphony orchestra. The charm of the piece lies in the simple vocal writing, suitable for a country service with organ. Upon completion of the Mass, Dvorak wrote to Hlávka "I am pleased to announce that I have finished the work and that I am supremely pleased with the result. I think it will be a work that will fully suit its purpose. It could be called: faith, hope, and love for God Almighty, and an expression of thanks for this great gift, for having been given the opportunity successfully to complete a work in praise of the Highest and in honour of our art".
